Assessment Performed: Summer 2025
The Riverwalk is a central feature of the village, offers views of the lively Saranac River, its bridges, and the surrounding landscape, and connects to various shops, cafes, and restaurants, encouraging a stroll through the commercial district.
The assessors note that there is no official designation of the Riverwalk, per se. Signage and flags provide guidance, with new stencils on various sidewalks contradicting signage on Broadway. Entrance to experience the full Riverwalk can be made either from the sidewalk next to RiverTrail Beerworks, or from municipal parking behind Hydro Point Park.
We recommend the entrance next to RiverTrail Beerworks (see our map) as it does not present handrail hazards to visitors. Visitors can enter and exit the Riverwalk at any point, and the route is not directional.
There are several hazardous areas within the Riverwalk including but not limited to slip hazards from flooding at the crosswalk at Church Street that may result in pedestrians unfavorably interacting with vehicular traffic, falling into the Saranac River at the dock/kayak put-in, a 10″ curb with no edge protection at the ramp from the sidewalk adjacent to the Skate Park, wheelchair users being unable to utilize the protected pedestrian crossing of the bridge over the Saranac River coming from or going to Dorsey Street, potential foot entrapment in a 7” hole on the right side of the bridge entrance across Saranac River south of Skate Park, abrasion and cut hazards from sharp edges on handrails due to corrosion on the on grey concrete accessible ramp structure behind Hydro Point Park and leading to/from the Riverwalk under Lapan Highway (Route 3), trip hazards due to crumbling masonry, and misalignment of pavers.
